Let me define some characteristics of an authority
website.
An authority site should have sufficient content so that a
human visitor finds important material and enough of it. If the

qualify as an authority site. Of course I should add that it is
all relevant. If all the other sites in the world for that
topic have even less content then even though the bar is set
low the 2-paragraph site may take the prize as being the

An authority site will not have broken links or missing
images and will be available. If a site is often down then it
will have a hard time making the grade. If a site is missing
links then it reflects poorly on the site as it appears to be
low quality and a low quality site can hardly be an authority
site.
If the site has few incoming links then this is a sign to
the search engines that no one is voting for it. Think about
this scenario. You are an accountant and you are in a room with
20 of your friends none of which are accountants. Suddenly a
stranger enters the rooms and wants to know if anyone knows an
accountant. Your 19 friends all point to you. The stranger is
not confused in the slightest as to who the accountant is. This
powerful pointing approach works on the Internet too. The more
sites that link to your site the more websites will be
pointing to you and the more
authoritative your site appears to be. There are more sites
pointing to your site. this counts significantly with the
search engines.
To say a bit more on this it is also important to get text
links from relevant website pages from the most authoritative
websites you can. This is very powerful.

Most sites are found because another site already index by
the search engines links into it. Therefore, to gain incoming
links aligns with the search engine approach of finding a
website. Therefore it is essential that you get incoming links
to your website.

A search engine notes the text that is used to create the
link. That is why text links are so valuable. Image links
should be avoided as the search engine cannot see or understand
the content of the image. However, a search engine can read the
text. Text links should be created with the keywords you want
to be found for.

The search engines want to see links from relevant pages to
other relevant pages. They do not want to see links from pages
that have duplicate content but rather closely related and
